Château de Beaucastel in Châteauneuf-du-Pape maakt één van de meest prestigieuze wijnen van de Rhône-vallei: Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin. Het is de super cuvée van het château die eervol vernoemd is naar de vader van de huidige eigenaren, de gebroeders Jean-Pierre en François Perrin. Deze cultwijn kreeg van Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate meermaals de perfecte score van 100/100 punten. Zo ook jaargang 2019 die overigens is opgenomen in Liv-ex’ Fine Wine Index Top 100, dé benchmark voor het monitoren van prijzen voor icoonwijnen waarbij de prijsontwikkeling op de secundaire market van de 100 meest gezochte wijnen ter wereld bijgehouden wordt. 

In Hommage à Jacques Perrin speelt mourvèdre de hoofdrol. De meeste stokken zijn oud en leveren kleine hoeveelheden bijzonder geconcentreerd fruit. De gemiddeld productie is circa 4.000 flessen per jaar (maar deze cuvée wordt alleen in de beste jaren gemaakt). De familie Perrin was een van de pioniers op het gebied van biologische wijnbouw (certificering in 1966) en volgt sinds 1974 de principes van de biodynamische wijnbouw. 

Extra allocatie

Ik heb een vaste set wijnen waarvoor ik als een vaste routine periodiek check of ik een extra allocatie in de wacht kan slepen. Eén van die wijnen is de Hommage. En het is me dankzij onze goede contacten weer eens gelukt om daarvan extra flessen te verwerven! Helemaal gelukkig ben ik er niet mee; de aantallen hadden immers best nog wat hoger mogen zijn. Maar wie het kleine niet eert… 

We hebben het hier over de legendarische 2019 met 100/100 en de meest recent gereleased jaargang 2020 met 97-99/100 punten van Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Twee prachtige cultwijnen van Château de Beaucastel:

“Marvelously complex, deeply fruited and massively concentrated yet wonderfully drinkable, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin challenges the number of superlatives that can be thrown at it. Scents of violets, tree bark, truffle, purple raspberries and blackberries all appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is rich, dense and velvety, and the finish shows enormous richness and length. Breathtaking stuff.”

“The tiny production 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin is the customary blend of roughly 60% Mourvèdre, 15% Grenache, and the rest Syrah and Cinsault that’s brought up in foudre. One sexy, powerful, full-bodied Southern Rhône, it sports a dense purple hue as well as a kaleidoscope-like array of blueberry, scorched earth, candied violets, pepper, and some almost northern Rhône-like meaty, smoky nuances. Full-bodied and incredibly pure, with a stacked mid-palate and ripe, supple tannins, it’s another vintage of this cuvée that will undoubtedly offer pleasure in it youth yet won’t hit prime time for a solid 7-8 years, and it should see its 30th birthday in fine form.”

One to watch!”

“Tasted from foudre, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is approximately 60% Mourvèdre (from the same parcel, year after year), with the balance a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Counoise. Ripe plums and truffle-like notes mark the nose, while the palate is full-bodied and rich, with a long, velvety finish. Showing even more complexity and length than the regular bottling, there's a chance this could reach a triple-digit score down the road. Always one of the highlights of my visits in Chateaneuf du Pape, the cellars at Beaucastel were a bit dusty when I arrived, as the long-awaited expansion had just gotten underway. Built using the latest practices in sustainability and conservation, it's expected to be completed in 2024. The 2021 Syrah had just been picked, and the expectation was that the Grenache would be harvested beginning the following day. Something worth noting, although the family doesn't actively promote it, is that Beaucastel's farming has been certified organic since 1966, and the vineyards have been farmed along biodynamic principles since 1974 (although not certified as such).”

“Enveloping nose of super-ripe orange, pomegranate and cigar leaf that’s still very youthful and needs time to reveal its myriad nuances. Also notes of licorice, dried herbs and rose petals. Enormous concentration, silkiness and finesse on the expansive palate. Extravagant in the best sense of that word! The finish gets finer, the closer it gets to infinity. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”

“Lastly, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Homage A Jacque Perrin was tasted out of foudre and is clearly another brilliant vintage here. I always find this cuvée, which is almost all Mourvedre, to offer more blue fruit characteristics in its youth, and the 2020 is no exception, offering tons of blueberry, cassis, and black raspberry as well as notes of smoked meat, tobacco, graphite, and peppery herbs. With remarkable purity, full-bodied richness, building yet incredible tannins, and the same straight, focused, powerful mouthfeel of the classic cuvée, it's not going to show its full potential until a solid decade after the vintage and it will be a 30-year wine.”

“Gorgeous florality on the nose, fresh rose petals and sweet red fruits, so beguiling and tempting. Beautiful fragranced fruit on the palate, the roses really continue all the way, edging the fruit and giving the palate such scent. Tannins are smooth and well integrated and this has a gorgeous texture, full and generous but silky smooth and so delectable. Excellent acidity gives freshness and energy and underpins the flavours giving a lovely hit of spiced liquorice, caramelised nuts and cola cubes. Feels really well worked, intense and concentrated but excellent definition and focus. A stylish and seductive wine. Hold onto for a few years. 5% Counoise completes the blend.”

“75% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, 10% Grenache, 5% Counoise. Harvested on 26 August. Mid to deep in colour, the nose is wild and highly aromatic, offering pepper, violet, leather and game, together with fresh dark fruit. The palate is deep and multi-dimensional. The Mourvèdre-led blend is structured, dense and impressively fresh. Floral is a term seldom used in this hot part of France, yet here the higher tones are admirable and offset the deeper, richer black fruit. Very long and spiced on the finish.”

Mijn advies

Na Bourgogne en Bordeaux is Rhône de eerstvolgende belangrijke Franse streek voor ‘fine wines’. Cultwijn Hommage à Jacques Perrin doet qua ratings door het toonaangevende Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate absoluut niet onder (deels dus zelfs beter!!) voor de ratings die de crème de la crème van de Médoc, de 1e Grand Cru Classé Châteaus, en bijvoorbeeld Bourgogne cultwijn Romanée-Conti Grand Cru krijgen. De prijs is echter wél flink lager! Het betekent dat u Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin 2019/2020 met een gerust hart naar uw kelder kunt halen, omdat:

• De wijnen van een ongelofelijk mooie kwaliteit zijn;
• Zij een faire verhouding tussen marktprijs en wine critic ratings tonen en dus niet ‘overrated’ zijn;
• Iedere zelfs lichte stijging in de vraag - bijvoorbeeld ten nadele van iconen uit Bourgogne en Bordeaux - de prijzen al snel kan opdrijven gezien het feit dat het aantal Rhônehuizen dat cultwijnen voortbrengt betrekkelijk klein is en de huidige prijzen in verhouding nog lang niet aan hun plafond zitten.
