Eind januari vond in Engeland traditiegetrouw de jaarlijkse Southwold Tasting plaats waarbij een selecte groep van onder meer tien Masters of Wine en verscheidene bekende wijncritici bij elkaar komen voor een beoordeling van de Bordeaux jaargang die dan 3½ jaar geleden geoogst werd. Dit jaar was derhalve Bordeaux 2019 aan de beurt.  

Voor de 3-daagse blindproeverij waren Neal Martin (Vinous), Lisa Perrotti-Brown (The Wine Indepent, voorheen The Wine Advocate) en Jancis Robinson MW (ook Master of Wine overigens) aanwezig. Die laatste was de eerste die begin deze maand de bevindingen publiceerde op jancisrobinson.com alsmede in haar column in Financial Times:

“The great thing about 2019 is its consistency and the fact that it seems to have masses of ripe fruit, but lots of tannin to keep the wines going for many a long year (longevity is a classic bordeaux attribute). And miraculously in view of the weather, the 2019s also have quite enough freshness to make them alluring.”

“Now that the wines have well and truly settled into bottle, on the basis of tasting 270 of them blind two weeks ago, I can report that the vintage is looking very good indeed, perhaps the best I have ever tasted at this stage.”

Het verdict van alle aanwezigen was unaniem: overall gezien - uitzonderingen zijn er natuurlijk altijd - is 2019 de allerbeste jaargang vanaf 2009!

Het is bekend dat de prijzen voor Bordeaux 2019 in de lift zitten. Toch zijn er op dit moment nog enkele heel aantrekkelijke best value châteaus die een uitstekende prijs/kwaliteit ratio bieden in de markt.

Het imponerende wijngaardareaal van Château Gloria bestaat uit percelen die in het verleden gekocht zijn van Grand Cru Classé châteaus. Mocht de Médoc classificatie van 1855 nog ooit herzien worden -  ik denk niet dat dit gauw gaat gebeuren… - maakt Gloria werkelijk een heel goede kans gepromoveerd te worden tot Grand Cru Classé.

“Showing beautifully, with the polished, pure, elegant style of the vintage, the 2019 Château Gloria sports a deeper ruby/purple color as well as great aromatics of cassis and assorted blue fruits to go with smoked tobacco, cedar pencil, damp earth, and floral notes. I love its purity, and it's just a quintessential, medium to full-bodied, layered Saint-Julien that can be drunk today or cellared for a solid two decades. It should be a no-brainer purchase for the wine lovers out there.”

“This estate has been on a roll of late, and the 2019 Château Meyney is a terrific wine. Beautiful notes of crème de cassis, spicy oak, dried flowers, and dried tobacco all emerge from the glass, and this beauty is medium to full-bodied, with a seamless texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. Count me impressed. Not a powerhouse, it should drink nicely right out of the gate yet also evolve for 20 years or more.”

“Coming from the Cazes team, the 2019 Château Ormes De Pez is gorgeous and shines in the vintage. Pure crème de cassis, mulberries, leafy herbs, Asian spices, and lead pencil all emerge on the nose, and this medium to full-bodied 2019 has the vintage’s pure, focused, elegant style while staying ripe, supple, and textured. The balance is spot on, and it's going to hit maturity in roughly 8-10 years and have two decades of prime drinking.”

Mijn advies

We hadden in 2022 al vastgesteld dat de prijzen voor Bordeaux 2019 zouden gaan stijgen gelet op hoe geweldig mooi deze jaargang zich op fles presenteert. Het verdict van de Southwold Tasting zal hieraan waarschijnlijk nog eens een extra impuls aan geven.
