Oenologist Giuseppe Caviola is considered a ‘modernist’ by some but this Barolo was aged in large oak casks only. Nebbiolo from Novello grown at 420 m above sea level on sandy clay rich in chalk. Total skin contact 25–30 days. Aged for 24 months in big barrels followed by 12 months in concrete tanks.
Just mid ruby. Still quite tight and dusty on the nose but with a sense of salinity. It may be big barrel but there seems to be a whisper of new oak. Lots of sour-cherry and raspberry fruit and with plenty of stuffing on the palate. Understated, long-lasting, sandpapery tannins. Elegant and yet quite embracing. Drink 2022 – 2034

Delightful nose of oranges, sour cherries, peach pits, wild raspberries and sandalwood. Full-bodied, with firm, tightly-knit tannins. Lots of flavor and power. Coming together beautifully. Better from 2024.

Signed by enologist Giuseppe Caviola, the Suadela Collezione degli Enologi 2016 Barolo sources its Nebbiolo from sandy clay soils at 420 meters in elevation in the township of Novello. It ages in concrete vats for 12 months and botte grande for two years. The results are linear and tight, reflecting the personality of Nebbiolo and the classic 2016 growing season. After a few moments in the glass, the wine becomes more expansive and fleshed out, showing tar, purple fruit, dried ginger and pressed rose. Production is 2,000 bottles.
