Brezza Cannubi 2018 Barolo

From the classic heart of Barolo's most famed vineyard, this lovely, fragrant wine boasts compelling aromas including camphor, pressed rose, new leather and woodland berry. Firm, elegantly structured and delicious, the focused palate delivers juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and baking spice set against taut, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it beautifully balanced and should keep it evolving for years. Drink 2026–2038.

The Brezza family farms a beautiful spot in Cannubi, and their hotel and restaurant are just up the road on the way to the Barolo town center. Their 2018 Barolo Cannubi opens to a rather mild or subdued bouquet, although varietal tones of wild rose, redcurrant, lilac and crushed stone are nicely on display. The effect is quietly nuanced and pretty. Made with certified organic fruit, this is a graceful and slightly understated vintage, but it stands out well against recent past releases.

The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is attractieve, bit also embryonic. Sweet tobacco, cedar, leather, dried herbs and crushed rose petal emerge, but only with some reluctance. Silky Cannubi tannines lend finesse, suggesting what is to come. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2018 is going to need a few years to be fully expressive. The 2018 is suave and very nicely balanced, especially for the year, but it is also the least expressive wine in the range today.
