Château Angélus behoort tot de absolute top van Saint-Émilion. Niet voor niets was het jarenlang geklasseerd als Premier Grand Cru Classé ‘A’ — een status die het huis in 2022 vrijwillig opgaf, samen met onder andere Cheval Blanc. Niet omdat de wijn minder werd, integendeel: de kwaliteit van de classificatie was niet meer toereikend voor de nieuwe koers van Angélus. Deze 2024 bewijst hun gelijk in die overtuiging.
Hubert de Boüard (eigenaar van Château Angélus én beroemd consulting oenologue voor andere châteaus) beleefde in 2024 een jubileumjaar: het is zijn 40ste vintage met Angélus.- vandaar ook het toegevoegde etiket met 40 boomringen overigens. Hubert heeft in de periode 1985-2012 in zijn continue streven om de kwaliteit naar een nóg hoger peil te brengen, ontzettend veel verbeteringen doorgevoerd op Angélus. Neem bijvoorbeeld het wijngaardbeheer: hij paste de snoeimethoden en plantdichtheid aan, introduceerde het principe van ‘groene oogst’ en focuste op een plot-by-plot-benadering. Tegenwoordig zwaait Huberts dochter Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal de scepter over het château.
Château Angélus is bezig aan een stilistische omwenteling, weg van de 'betrouwbare krachtpatser' die het was (mede door het hoge percentage cabernet franc) en meer richting finesse en elegantie. Dit is het jaar waarin het volledig in die opzet slaagt. Antonio Galloni (Vinous, 93-95 punten) schrijft: "It is the first vintage I have tasted that captures the newer approach at Angelus, one where the wines are not as extracted as in the past". Juist deze jaargang, waarin sommige châteaus worstelden met overextractie en moeizame rijping van de druiven, is dat een geweldige uitkomst voor Angélus, dat geholpen was door een relatief grote en gezonde oogst. De tannines zijn prachtig, duidelijk aanwezig en nergens teveel. Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux, 94 punten) noemde het "very clearly finessed, sleek, with quiet confidence". De wijn bestaat uit merlot (60%) en cabernet franc (40%) en ruikt daarom naar donkere kersen, pruimen en viooltjes. Met leer, een mooie houttoets en vol fruit aan het eind is het een sierlijke en vorstelijke wijn.

The 2024 Angelus is very fine. It is the first vintage I have tasted that captures the newer approach at Angelus, one where the wines are not as extracted as in the past. Black cherry, plum, spice, new leather and menthol fill out the layers effortlessly. Here, too, the wine shows superb balance and real textural presence. The blend is 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, with the Merlot being raised in 80% new oak and 20% once-filled barrels, and the Cabernet Franc in equal parts.

Vivid plum colour, cedar and gunsmoke on the opening, skilfully and carefully put together, slim through the palate, but this is very clearly finessed, sleek, with quiet confidence, and pumice stone texture, cherry pit, squid ink, damson, rosebud, Cabernet Franc dominant in terms of its floral aromatics. 39hl/h yield, 40th anniversary vintage of Hubert de Böuard. This will for sure be ready to drink earlier than many vintages of Angélus, but it is well structured and will age for many years to come. No chaptilisation.

A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, cropped at a very honorable 40 hectoliters per hectare, the 2024 Angélus has turned out well, offering up aromas of dark berries, minty plums and violet, framed by a deft touch of toasty oak. Medium-bodied, ample and suave, it's polished and textural, with sweet but present tannins and creditable persistence on the finish.
