"A powerful wine, and complete in itself." - Falstaff
Vorige vintage was Château Batailley maar liefst een eeuw in handen van de familie Borie-Castéja en bestond het domein zelfs al 400 jaar. Frédéric Castéja, 4de generatie, nam ruim de tijd om ons de wijn te laten proeven op het château (zie onderstaande foto). Ons viel meteen op: deze karakteristieke Pauillac onderstreept deze elegante jaargang bij uitstek. Dat betekent: productie was aanzienlijk veel kleiner, maar de kwaliteit van het fruit, de zuren en tannines in de wijn zijn zéér hoog.
Nagenoeg dezelfde blend als vorig jaar, met een paar procent Merlot, iets minder Cabernet Sauvignon en géén Cabernet Franc: 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot en 19% Merlot. Pauillac kan krachtig van structuur zijn; Batailley vonden we uitgesproken sierlijk. Een sprekende wijn, met de aroma’s van mooi gerijpt, rood fruit, grafiet, ceder en zoete specerijen. De tannines zijn dedecideerd, omhullend en rond; de mond wordt gevuld met zachte structuur en fruitdikte. Batailley is klassiek krachtig, maar dit jaar nog een stuk sappiger en preciezer dan afgelopen jaren. Falstaff concludeert: "A powerful wine, and complete in itself."

The 2025 Batailley marries power with finesse. Crème de cassis, new leather, spice, menthol and lavender caress the palate. The 2025 is quite deep and has great balance. This brooding, potent Pauillac has so much to offer. All it needs is time for the tannins to soften.

Wild flowers, bramble fruit, dark blackcurrants and a lick of cocoa powder and cinnamon spice. Supple and alive, wow, this is excellent, the juicy quality is flawless with filling tannins that give amplitude and width but no overt muscle or heaviness. Really a light touch in the glass, hands off. Very modern, not lacking anything, I have a real soft spot for this wine and it delivers again with such great quality-to-price ratio. Charming, sophisticated, grippy, fleshy, but so cool and so juicy. The purity is outstanding. I love it. Blueberries, fragrant raspberries and cherries with plums. Classic and so drinkable.

A focused and refined red with a linear profile, showing the precision that the acidity and fine-grained tannins bring to this cabernet blend. There is rigor but also underlying juiciness and sophistication. 78% cabernet sauvignon, 19% merlot and 3% petit verdot.

Deep, dark ruby-garnet colour, opaque core, violet highlights, a delicate lightening
at the rim. Cranberry, blackcurrant, blackberry leaves, milk chocolate. A hint of
caramel from the oak. The palate is full-bodied and robust, very dense yet well
balanced; it comes across as quite precise, with a penetrating minerality, whilst the
dryness typical of the vintage is only very subtly pronounced. A powerful wine, and
complete in itself.
