Château Clinet ligt in het hart van Pomerol, op het fameuze plateau waar de grootste merlotwijnen ter wereld worden geboren. Het is een klein domein, maar met een grote reputatie. De wijngaarden van Clinet zijn beplant met een hoog percentage merlot en een klein aandeel cabernet sauvignon, wat ongebruikelijk is voor Pomerol. Die bijzondere keuze zorgt voor een unieke stijl waarin rijpe kracht en verfijnde elegantie hand in hand gaan.
De bodem van Clinet bestaat uit ijzerrijke klei en grind, typerend voor het plateau van Pomerol. Het terroir is gezegend met een uitstekende drainage en een warme ondergrond die de druiven perfect laat rijpen. In de jaren negentig maakte Château Clinet een enorme kwaliteitsontwikkeling door, mede onder invloed van wijnadviseur Michel Rolland. Tegenwoordig staat het domein onder leiding van de familie Laborde, die met toewijding en visie het erfgoed van Clinet verder uitbouwt.
Het allereerste dat Ronan deed, toen hij de leiding kreeg, was het rooien van circa 20% van het wijngaardareaal (totaal 11,64 ha). Vóór phylloxera was cabernet sauvignon nog de dominante druif bij Clinet; bij het herplanten van de gerooide stokken kreeg deze druif voorrang. Nu bestaat de aanplant uit 88% merlot en 12% cabernet sauvignon en het aandeel cabernet sauvignon in de blend van 2024 is zelfs 20%. Antonio Galloni schreef: "Clinet is a rare Pomerol that is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the Cabernet very much in evidence." Een opvallend wapenfeit in Pomerol.
Clinet was voor ons een wijn die direct indruk maakte. Compact en intens, met het pure karakter van cabernet in een glansrijke bijrol: grafiet, munt en viooltjes. In het expressieve bouquet vallen een noten, naast drop, bosgrond en het donkere fruit op. De merlot voelt daarbij alsof er afwisselend lagen rijpe bramen, bessen, pruimen en chocolade gedrapeerd zijn over over een stevige kern; door betere extractie van de most heeft Ronan een wijn gemaakt van diepgang en rijke textuur. Sommige Pomerols van dit jaar zijn nogal ruw gestructureerd. Clinet, daarentegen, is prachtig opgebouwd: krachtig en rijk, maar gebalanceerd. Het is daarmee ook een wijn, die zich bij uitstek leent voor de kelder. Met speels gemak streeft Clinet zijn concurrenten voorbij.

The 2024 Clinet is a dark, stylish wine. Black cherry, lavender, spice, licorice and blue-toned fruit are beautifully delineated. Dark and vibrant in the glass, with terrific depth, Clinet is super-expressive in 2024. Ronan Laborde bled the musts to bring the wine into the rich, textured style he seeks here. Clinet is a rare Pomerol that is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the Cabernet very much in evidence.

The 2024 Clinet was picked from September 23 to October 4 at 38 hl/ha and matured in 60% new oak. The bouquet opens with red and black fruit, pencil shavings from the Cabernet and light tertiary scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. The oak is neatly integrated and benefits from slightly less new wood, which allows the terroir to show through. Cohesive toward the finish with decent length, this is a thoughtfully produced Clinet that will age well in bottle.

Delicate floral and inky aromas. Smooth and so supple, great energy, vibrancy and lift straight away. Cool and so silky but with slightly fleshy tannins joined by bright acidity that gives this a fun and expressive palate. Characterful and nicely balanced with salty tannins on the finish. Sleek and really well made with energy and focus. Really leans into the vintage but accessible and fresh. Totally moreish. A yield of 35hl/ha.

Rich sweet damson and raspberry fruit, vanilla bean, caramel, the gourmet side of Pomerol is checking in, which we have missed in many, the tannins are sleek and well extracted, no dilution through the palate, good job.
