Fronsac (en trouwens ook Canon-Fronsac) op de rechteroever had lange tijd de reputatie wijnen ‘van matige tot acceptabele’ kwaliteit te maken, maar dat is echt passé.
Jane Anson (Bordeaux expert die woont en werkt vanuit de regio) noteerde: ‘These two Right Bank appellations aren’t the first that come to mind when you think of Bordeaux. But in terms of value and potential they should be’. Ze heeft helemaal gelijk natuurlijk. Toch blijft Fronsac qua imago in de schaduw staan van de ‘grote broers’ Saint-Emilion en Pomerol. Maar dat motiveert ons juist enorm om de parels van Fronsac, zoals deze Château Dalem 2022, onder uw aandacht te brengen. Want, zoals u weet, dragen wij juist minder bekende appellations waar uitstekende en -nog- heel betaalbare wijnen gemaakt worden, een warm hart toe.
Château Dalem is sinds 1950 in eigendom van de familie Rullier. Het is gelegen in het AOC Fronsac dorpje Saillans waar het allerbeste terroir van de appellation te vinden is. In 2019 werd een gloednieuwe wijnmakerij-kelder in gebruik genomen. Jane Anson: “I’m a big fan of Château Dalem, on an excellent spot in Fronsac and made with great care and attention that comes through in the density of the fruit”.
Gelet op de scores van Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider) - en trouwens ook die van Parker - is de kwaliteit van Dalem sinds de jaargang 2015 duidelijk verbeterd. Waarbij de jaargang 2022 de kroon spant. Omdat in dat jaar alles in optima forma bij elkaar komt. De Franse criticus Jean-Marc Quarin schrijft lyrisch: ‘Ik vind er de bijzonder fraaie structuur van de grote Médocs, gekoppeld aan de onbeschrijfelijke charme van de rechteroever, in terug.’ (94/100). ‘One of the best from here’, noteert James Suckling. Bravo!
En zoals beloofd is de prijs-kwaliteit ratio scherp. Jeb Dunnuck noteert (op zijn Amerikaans): ‘This château offers some serious bang for the buck.’

James Suckling 94-95/100 punten This has a wide velvety texture with medium to full body and beautiful dark fruit in the middle. Ripe but crunchy with well integrated velvety tannins. Lingering and textural at the end. One of the best from here.
Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider) 93-95/100 punten Spices, flowers, fruits, silky tannins and layers of red and black plums that are a treat to taste. The wine is medium-bodied, soft, round and delivers length and complexity in the finish. Drink from 2025-2037.
Jeb Dunnuck 91-93/100 punten I loved the 2022 Château Dalem, and this château offers some serious bang for the buck. Cassis, plums, black cherries, and leafy herbs, as well as some spicy oak, all emerge on the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a round, supple mouthfeel and outstanding length.
Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux) 92/100 punten Powerful, plenty of tannins, with dark chocolate character, fig, blackberry, cassis, cocoa bean, liqourice. A good quality wine with chunky tannins. 50% new oak
Falstaff 92/100 punten Dark ruby garnet, opaque core, purple reflections, subtle rim brightening. Fresh black cherries, dark wild berries, delicate herbal savouriness, mineral touch. Medium-bodied, red berries and fresh, pleasant acidic bow, lemony-mineral finish, a lively food companion.
