Op een van de hoogste zand- en grindplateaus van Margaux ligt Château du Tertre – een wijnhuis dat zijn naam letterlijk ontleent aan deze verheven ligging: ‘du tertre’ betekent ‘van de heuvel’. Het château kent een geschiedenis die teruggaat tot de 12e eeuw en behoort sinds 1855 tot de geclassificeerde Grands Crus Classés. De ligging in het zuidelijke deel van de appellatie zorgt voor een eigenzinnig profiel, met wijnen die elegantie, aromatische finesse en een zekere luchtigheid combineren met subtiele diepgang.
Château du Tertre is lange tijd een goed bewaard geheim geweest onder kenners. In de jaren ’90 kwam het domein onder beheer van de Nederlandse ondernemer Eric Albada Jelgersma, die ook Château Giscours bezat. Onder zijn leiding is het château volledig gerenoveerd en is er aanzienlijk geïnvesteerd in zowel wijngaardbeheer als keldertechniek. De inspanningen hebben geleid tot een consistente kwaliteitssprong, met wijnen die vandaag de dag tot de fijnste vertegenwoordigers van Margaux behoren.
De blend bestaat doorgaans uit een relatief hoog aandeel cabernet sauvignon, aangevuld met merlot, cabernet franc en petit verdot. Dat resulteert in een wijn met een expressieve geur van rood fruit, florale tonen en fijne kruiden. In de mond is Château du Tertre doorgaans soepel en verfijnd, met fluweelzachte tannines en een subtiele mineraliteit.
Waar veel Margaux-wijnen bekendstaan om hun verleidelijke charme, biedt Château du Tertre een interessante twist: hier is sprake van klassieke structuur en ouderwetse grandeur, zonder de toegankelijkheid te verliezen. Een wijn voor liefhebbers van subtiliteit en stijl.

Lifted fragrance - blackcurrants and cherries on the nose. Tannins have a soft chew and fleshiness to them with clear and cool fruit providing the main focus. There’s bright acidity with a mouthwatering edge that is so enjoyable before salty, tobacco aspects come in on the finish. Well made with precision and still enough fruit and flavour to be enjoyable. It’s likely ageing will add a touch more structure. Very good. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Ageing 60% new oak. 60% production. 3.6pH. Tasted three times.

The palate is medium-bodied with a bit of chewiness on the entry and light grip. This attenuates slightly toward the finish but there is freshness and sapidity. Not a long-term du Tertre but I think it is well made.
