Listrac stapt steeds meer uit de schaduw van de wereldberoemde buurcommunes op de linkeroever van Bordeaux. Listrac-Médoc is inmiddels een gerespecteerde appellatie geworden naast Moulis, Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac en Saint-Estèphe. Colin Haye (The Drinks Business) schrijft noemt Fonréaud dit jaar: "Highly recommended and a perfect example of the value that Bordeaux brings from the leading wines of appellations like Listrac."
Succes en tragedie in Listrac
Léo Chanfrau kocht het château in 1962 en renoveerde het karakteristieke wijngoed. Hij kwam enkele jaren later, in 1970, bij een tragisch tractorongeval om het leven, maar liet zijn familie een fantastisch domein na. Broers Loïc en Guillaume Chanfrau (vierde generatie) staan nu aan het roer. Fonréaud ligt op één van de hoogste grindterrassen van de Médoc, gelegen tussen de Atlantische Oceaan en de monding van de Gironde. Grind zorgt voor ideale wijngaardcondities met goede drainage en de nabijheid van de oceaan is ideaal, vooral met de steeds warmere zomers (zoals 2025) in het achterhoofd.
Elegante attitude
Het aandeel cabernet sauvignon (55%) in de Fonréaud Rouge zorgt voor fijne complexiteit en concentratie, de merlot (40%) brengt levendigheid in de vorm van sappig rood fruit en klein percentage petit verdot (5%) geeft een donker randje, zowel in kleur als kruidigheid. De wijn is daardoor donker van kleur, maar licht van stof.
Jane Anson noemt Fonréaud dit jaar ook "deeper in colour than the others in the range" en dat herkenden wij ook. Die concentratie van kleur is een voorbode voor de wijn op het palet:
donkere bessen, rijpe cassis en cacao voeren de boventoon. De smaak van geroosterde groene kruiden, specerijen en de lichte grip van gedoseerde tannines komen later en bieden het verleidelijke fruit de ruggengraat die het verdient. Het is een sprankelende en energieke wijn, voelt plezierig en fijn in balans. Neal Martin concludeerde; "What an excellent Listrac from Château Fonréaud."

The 2025 Fonréaud has a classy bouquet with tightly wound blackberry and graphite scents, unfolding gradually in the glass. The palate is well balanced, with fine grip, supple but firm tannins, harmonious and crisp, with a tingle of spices on the finish. What an excellent Listrac from Château Fonréaud.

Deeper in colour than the others in the range, reflecting the higher Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. Glass staining vivid plum, dark capsicum and red pepper spice, sage and rosemary, this is enjoyable with plenty of character, needs time to soften but great potential here. Harvest from September 1 to 19. Now out of Cru Bourgeois system. Tasted twice. 35hl/h yield.

A very complete and poised wine with ripe black berries and a touch of dark chocolate. Perfect balance of fresh acidity and slightly gravelly tannins. The wine will benefit from a few years of ageing in the bottle.

Lovely, as it so often is, and has been above all in recent vintages. It's more than habitually smoky in this vintage. The bright crunchy red and darker berry fruits are shimmering in their purity and this is very luminous for a wine at this kind of price point. Highly recommended and a perfect example of the value that Bordeaux brings from the leading wines of appellations like Listrac.

A classic wine in the making, yet one that combines depth with elegance, the 2025 Fonréaud offers up aromas of dark berries, spices and lead pencil, complemented by discreet notes of oak. Medium- to full-bodied, seamless and layered, it’s built around a tensile, straight profile framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a long, licorice-inflected finish. It's a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.
