Château Gloria in Saint-Julien is ontstaan na de classificatie van 1855; mocht die ooit herzien worden, dan zou Gloria zonder twijfel als Grand Cru Classé geklasseerd worden. Het wijngaardareaal van het château is opgebouwd door percelen van Grand Cru Classé châteaus over te nemen!
Gloria is het levenswerk van Henri Martin (1903-1991). Henri was onder meer régisseur op Latour. Tijdens WO II kocht hij zijn eerste eigen perceel van 6 ha van Saint-Julien 4e Grand Cru Classé Château Beychevelle. Dit luidde het begin in van Château Gloria. In de jaren die volgden, vergrootte Martin de bezitting stap voor stap door percelen van nog meer Grand Cru Classé châteaus (onder meer Léoville-Poyferré, Gruaud Larose, Duhart-Milon!) over te nemen.
Gloria moge dan op papier een ‘gewone’ Saint-Julien zijn, maar vergis u niet: dit is een wijn met een fenomenaal goede prijs-kwaliteitverhouding die de vergelijking met de beroemde châteaus zonder enige twijfel heel goed kan doorstaan.

Showing beautifully, with the polished, pure, elegant style of the vintage, the 2019 Château Gloria sports a deeper ruby/purple color as well as great aromatics of cassis and assorted blue fruits to go with smoked tobacco, cedar pencil, damp earth, and floral notes. I love its purity, and it's just a quintessential, medium to full-bodied, layered Saint-Julien that can be drunk today or cellared for a solid two decades. It should be a no-brainer purchase for the wine lovers out there.

The 2019 Gloria personifies classic Saint-Julien, offering blackberry, wild hedgerow, cedar and tobacco scents, maybe a little conservative in style, but unashamed about that. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite firm tannins. Fresh and saline, this gets the saliva going with a precise, persistent finish and leaves hints of graphite on the aftertaste. Excellent.

The 2019 Gloria has turned out very well, delivering aromas of blackcurrants, plums, burning embers and a deft framing of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and nicely concentrated, with a vibrant core of ripe and fleshy fruit, lively acids and powdery structuring tannins that assert themselves on the youthfully firm finish, this shows considerable promise. Another winning velvety texture out of St Julien. You can trace the warmth and generosity of the vintage in the concentration and the ripeness of these blackberry and raspberry fruits but it is so seductive and carefully balanced with a core of freshness and a ton of crushed stone, black chocolate and baked earth adding layers and interest. This should be good value and is a definite buy. So much character and personality, right up there with the best vintages of this property. 40% new oak, 5% Petit Verdot completes the blend.

Tasted blind. Complex nose with savoury layers. Aromatic ink. Smooth and polished. Lovely balance with really lively energy. Nothing forced. Very long. Almost pretty!
