"an insider's secret Pomerol" - The Wine Cellar Insider
Guillot-Clauzel is een microdomein. Het grootste aandeel in de blend is merlot (80%), dat afkomstig is van oude stokken van in totaal 2 hectare aan wijngaarden. De rest van het fruit (cabernet franc) is afkomstig van slechts 0,15 hectare. De percelen zijn prachtig gelegen (vlak naast Le Pin) op het zuiden en glooien langzaam de heuvel af. Onder de 3 meter dikke bovenlaag van grind ligt een diepe kleilaag, ideaal voor de warmte- en waterhuishouding van de wijnstokken.
In de vatenkelder van Guillaume - een groot woord voor de schuur waar hij zijn wijnen maakt - zagen wij twee vaten Saint-Émilion liggen tussen alle Pomerol. Guillaume vertelde ons dat er in Pomerol in zeer kleine hoeveelheid Saint-Émilion gebruikt mag worden (vice versa is verboden). De familie Thienpont onderhoudt overigens goede, oude banden met hun tonneliers: het levert ze de beste barriques op. In dit geval wordt de wijn voor één derde gerijpt op nieuw Frans eikenhout en iedere 4 maanden wordt de wijn overgeheveld van vat tot vat (racking); dat helpt onder andere bij het vinden van de juiste structuur in de wijn.
Dat is overigens iets waar Guillaume veel aandacht voor heeft. Voor de extractie van de druiven wordt namelijk lang de tijd genomen; het gebeurt subtiel, zodat de structuur extra fijn is. Dat is te merken: de wijn voelt "upper class", gesofisticeerd en gepolijst aan. Een pure wijn met enorme lengte. "It has a remarkable sense of purity", schreef Jeb Dunnuck.
Guillaume praatte over 2024 als een "anomalie": het was een relatief koel en nat jaar, maar met moderne technieken heeft hij toch een prachtig rijpe wijn kunnen maken. Het is dan ook een opvallend geparfumeerde Pomerol, met een duidelijk aardse kant, aangenaam pittig op het palet en met fraîcheur en kracht. Aromatisch valt er veel te ontdekken. The Wine Cellar Insider noemt het "Like walking into a flower shop with cherries and plums scattered across the floor, the wine is silky, pure, elegant, and fresh." Donkere bessen, pruimen, zwarte kersen, viooltjes, ceder, munt en groenblad, koffiebonen, chcocolade en tabak. De doorlopende mineraliteit laat zich het best herkennen in de geur van natte stenen en een iets zilte afdronk. Alles aan deze wijn voelt elegant.
The Wine Cellar Insider noemt het ook "an insider's secret Pomerol" en sluit af met goed advies; "If you are a fan of Pomerol and want to try something new, check it out." Pomerol-liefhebber of niet; dit is een gemeend advies voor iedere Bordeauxliefhebber.

Lovely perfume aromatics, the Cabernet shining, delicate floral aspects with some dark berry fruit aromas. Pure and finely presented, seamless and gentle. Not super demonstrative or plush, but this has silky tannins and cool fresh minty blue fruit too. Lots of gravel minerality comes through giving this a nice signature. Really finessed. Balanced, lightly framed but nonetheless charming. Gentle mouthwatering acidity. Still flavoured on the finish, this is a complex wine and well made. Harvest started 25th September, finished on the 2nd October. Ageing 33% new French oak barrels. A yield of 30hl/ha. 3.72pH

The 2024 Guillot-Clauzel is very pretty, supple wine. Dark red fruit, blood orange, spice, cedar, menthol, licorice and mocha are nicely pushed forward. Soft, silky tannins wrap it all together in style. Guillot-Clauzel impresses with its gracious personality and impeccable balance. I imagine it will drink well right out of the gate. It's all charm here.

Based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Château Guillot-Clauzel comes from a gravelly site just beside Le Pin and is aging in 30% new French oak. Its solid ruby hue is followed by an incredibly pure Pomerol with a gravelly, mineral character as well as ripe red and black fruits, leafy herbs, tobacco, and sappy flowers. It's balanced, medium-bodied, has a remarkable sense of purity, and solid tannins.
