Tot in de jaren 80 was Château Haut-Bages Libéral in handen van een groep, onder leiding van Jacques Merlaunt. Zijn kleindochter Claire is sinds 2000 verantwoordelijk voor het domein. Zij ontmoette een ambitieuze wijnman, werd verliefd en trouwde met hem. Nu gaat ze door onder de naam Claire Villars-Lurton. Claire en Gonzague beheren samen zowel Durfort-Vivens als Haut-Bages Libéral onder de noemer 'G&C Lurton Group'.
Tijdens ons bezoek aan Château Durfort-Vivens kregen wij ook Haut-Bages Libéral in het glas. Het zijn duidelijk wijnbroers - zij het anders grootgebracht. Waar Durfort opgroeit in Margaux, komt Haut-Bages Libéral uit Pauillac. Daarnaast wordt deze wijn niet opgevoed in amforen, maar houten vaten (80%, waarvan de helft nieuw) en ovale betonnen tanks (de overige 20%). Er is overigens ook nog een overeenkomst: bij beide châteaus is Eric Boissenot de 'oenologist consultant'. Een saillant voorbeeld van familiegeschiedenissen in Bordeaux; Erics vader Jacques werkte al bij Durfort-Vivens ten tijde van Lucien Lurton.
Om de gelijkenis van deze twee wijnen verder te onderstrepen, is het zinvol om te kijken naar de cépage. Op een 0,5% na is de blend identiek: een half procent cabernet franc werd uitgewisseld voor een half procent cabernet sauvignon. Beide wijnen zijn grotendeels cabernet sauvignon, aangevuld met 5% merlot. Alle druiven die daarvoor gebruikt werden, zijn ook bij Haut-Bages Liberál biodynamisch gegroeid. Neal Martin schreef: "this is a successful biodynamic wine that has a spring in its step."
Die "spring in its step" markeert de levendige stijl. Het is een wijn die direct charmeert met zwoel rood fruit, wilde aardbeien en een florale zweem, die doet denken aan rozenblad. In de achtergrond spelen lichte specerijen mee. Als Neal Martin het heeft over "unashamedly classic Pauillac in style" dan gaat dat over de structuur van de wijn. De structuur is luchtig en levendig, met een bijna tastbare energie. De tannines zijn aanwezig, wat drogend, maar passen perfect bij het frisse, zilte slotakkoord. Een wijn met een open gezicht en een subtiele onderstroom – lichtvoetig, maar met karakter.
James Suckling noemde het "Possibly one of the best values from the vintage". Het is een uitdaging om voor deze prijs een betere Pauillac te vinden.

A wonderful wine, showing roasted herbs, fine spices and currants. Very firm and clean-cut with chalky tannins and a lot of vibration. Pure and long. A unique Pauillac marked by the purity, precision and texture of its tannins. Possibly one of the best values from the vintage. 94% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot and 1% cabernet franc. From biodynamically grown grapes.

The 2024 Haut-Bages Libéral was cropped at 30 hl/ha between September 24 and October 4. It's due to be aged for 12 months in 63% new oak barrels and 37% in ovoid amphoras. This has a lucid purple hue. The nose is a little timid at first but opens with a few swirls of the glass, revealing blackberry, wild hedgerow and light tobacco scents. The palate is medium-bodied, reserved in style and grainy in texture, with lighter tannins than the previous vintages and a graphite-infused finish. Unashamedly classic Pauillac in style, this is a successful biodynamic wine that has a spring in its step.

The 2024 Haut-Bages Libéral is a classy, polished wine. Silky contours meld around a core of succulent red-toned fruit, white pepper, blood orange and cinnamon. The 2024 is airy and a bit lighter texturally than most vintages, but all the signatures of the property are quite present.

Lovely deep plum colour, this is very high Cabernet Sauvignon but this is an estate where they often goes high, (2021 vintage was even higher than this at 97%). Savoury, slim, floral, precise and vivid, salinity, grip, lovely sense of lift and grip. 3.75 pH. Harvest 23 September to 8 October. 37 hl/ha. 70% new oak, 30% in amphora.
