Toch is het (inmiddels biodynamische) wijnhuis ook vernieuwend. In 2012 was Château Latour zelfs een bron van grote controverse toen het aankondigde niet langer mee te doen aan de jaarlijkse En Primeur campagnes met de rest van Bordeaux. Het geeft voortaan de jaargangen pas later uit, als deze langer in de kelders van het château hebben gerijpt.
Jaargang 2011 bestaat voor 84,5% uit cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot en het druppeltje dat overblijft is petit verdot. Om de wijn te begrijpen, is het belangrijk om te weten dat de druiven voor de Grand Vin afkomstig zijn van een wijngaard die direct aan het château gebouw grenst. Die gekoesterde wijngaard heet de ‘Enclos’ en is de ziel van Château Latour: het wordt gezien als één van de allerbeste terroirs van heel Bordeaux.
Wijnen uit Pauillac staan doorgaans bekend om hun tannineuze kracht, een uitgesproken hartige aard en donkerfruitige kern. Château Latour weet die kenmerken te verenigen in een complexe, gelaagde wijn van uitzonderlijke klasse en finesse. De wijnen hebben daarnaast een enorme kelderpotentie en kunnen decennialang opgelegd worden. Het geluk wil dat oogstjaar 2011 net op dronk begint te komen; wij bieden u nu de kans deze majestueuze Bordeaux te bemachtigen.

Een deel van deze jaargang is in 2012 En Primeur aangeboden - de laatste jaargang die En Primeur ging. De perfect gerijpte flessen die we u nu aanbieden zijn van een speciale ex-château release door Latour tijdens de lopende September World Releases 2023 en de flessen zullen ook als dusdanig door het château gekenmerkt worden. Deze flessen komen regelrecht uit de koele kelder van het château: provenance gegarandeerd! Ook belangrijk om te weten: dit zijn de laatste flessen van jaargang 2011 die door het château op de markt worden gebracht waardoor de wijn met de tijd alleen maar schaarser zal worden.

A delicious wine that stands out from many in the vintage. A ton of personality, with a sappy, raspberry, autumnal berry fruit as it opens and travels through the palate, with rose petals on the edge that give a beautiful uplift along with the classic trace of mint. Its tannins are a little more angular than you find in the 2010 and 2009, but it is starting to lengthen and open, although this was a vintage that was not immediately impressive in the way that the previous two had been. A stately Latour, one that needs another few years to really show its place. The last Latour to be sold en primeur in the old system. 34% of overall production. Harvest September 12 to 26.

Big tannins and impressive fruits are the hallmarks of this impressive wine. It is also subtle, not showing all its flavors at once, hiding beneath tannins and structure. For this fruity vintage, it shows a strong sense of direct, solid structure, only allowing the strong black plum and berry flavors to come through slowly. It is for the long haul, so don't drink before 2022, even better later.

This has a gorgeous core of steeped plum, boysenberry and black currant coulis flavors, backed by a prominent graphite note that drives through the lengthy finish, where extra hints of anise and sweet tobacco flitter in the background. Regal.

The 2011 Latour is well-defined on the nose with blackberry, bilberry, cedar, hoisin and a touch of mint. There is impressive intensity here, regal and convincing. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins. There is a solid backbone to this wine, plenty of freshness, quite powerful towards the finish with superb persistence. Wonderful. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

The nose is complex, featuring smoke, meat and hints of wood, with currants, olives and berries underneath. Full body with super-velvety tannins. The strong acidity gives the wine an edginess. Love the spicy, subtly fruity finish. Steely. Try in 2020.

A blend of 84.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 0.5% Petit Verdot, the 2011 Latour represents only 34% of the crop. It hit 13.1% natural alcohol. One of the vintage's most compelling wines, it possesses a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet, open-knit personality with ripe tannin, superb intensity, good purity and harmony, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and lots of crushed rock, floral and black as well as blue fruit notes in addition to hints of ink and forest floor. This beautifully rich, savory Latour will be surprisingly drinkable in 4-5 years, and should age easily for two decades or more.
