Château Léoville Barton is een van de meest geliefde en consistente Grands Crus Classés van de Médoc. Gelegen in het hart van Saint-Julien, behoort dit château sinds 1855 tot de Deuxièmes Grands Crus Classés. Al sinds 1826 is het in handen van de Iers-Franse familie Barton, die het met veel toewijding en zonder opsmuk beheert. Die no-nonsense filosofie proef je in de wijn: klassiek, eerlijk en doordrenkt van terroir.
De wijngaarden van Léoville Barton liggen op een prachtig terroir van kiezelrijke gronden met een klei-ondergrond – ideaal voor cabernet sauvignon, die de dominante druif vormt in de blend. Merlot en een klein aandeel cabernet franc zorgen voor aanvulling en balans. De wijn wordt traditioneel opgevoed in eikenhouten vaten, waarvan een aanzienlijk deel nieuw is.
Léoville Barton is nu al bijna twee eeuwen in het bezit van de familie Barton. Het landgoed is gelegen in het centrum van de appellation Saint-Julien. Dit is een van de wijnen, waar we het meest naar uitkijken in Saint-Julien. Dat komt door het gesofisticeerde karakter. Deze jaargang is typisch Léoville Barton: zó genuanceerd, diepzinnig en elegant vormgegeven. Het is daarnaast bijzonder consistent in de manier waarop dat naar voren komt - en dat is op zichzelf weer tekenend voor de kwaliteit.
De wijn heeft zich in de afgelopen jaren verheven tot een ander kaliber - mede door de vernieuwde wijnfaciliteiten en dominantie van cabernet sauvignon in de blend; maar liefst 92%. Sinds vorig jaar zit er ook cabernet franc in de blend - met een bescheiden 2%. Het fruit is helder te herkennen en wordt daarin geholpen door een jaargang, die elegantie onderstreept. William Kelley (Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate) schreef:

In vergelijking met Langoa Barton is Léoville Barton de contemplatieve wijn; de denker. De 2024 is sierlijk, dominant en gewichtig zonder zwaar te worden. Violet en lavendel, paars en zwart fruit, donkere cassis, bramen en pruimen. Daar komen grafiet, cacao, cederhout en bosgrond overheen, maar niets daarvan dringt zich op; alles dient zich aan in de juiste proportie. Opvallend zijn de goed geïntegeerde tannines. Jane Anson schreef over Léoville Barton: "Stands out for the elongated and supple shape and texture of the tannins, builds complexity over the palate and this is well structured". Deze wijn is absoluut geen lichtgewicht, maar weegt geen gram teveel. Prachtig.

A classic Bordeaux that shows finesse and poise. This is understated, with a medium body, lovely texture and acidity, freshness and brightness. It shows firm tannins that aren't chewy. Very long and honest, with pure fruit. 92% cabernet sauvignon, 6% merlot and 2% cabernet franc.

The 2024 Léoville Barton is a very beautiful wine. Black cherry, plum, lavender, new leather, graphite, crushed rocks, mocha and spice all meld together. A wine of classical build, Léoville Barton is also wonderfully deep and expressive. Today, all of its energy is directed inwards, but there is a lot of wine here. I can't wait to taste this from bottle. Tasted two times.

Unwinding in the glass with notes of cassis, plums, pencil shavings and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and impressively concentrated, with a taut but nicely integrated profile, concluding with a pure, penetrating finish.

The 2024 Léoville Barton was picked from September 24 to October 5 and contains just a little more Cabernet Sauvignon than previous vintages. Matured in 60% new oak, this has an open bouquet with black fruit, potpourri and light sous-bois scents—quintessentially Barton. The palate is medium-bodied, well balanced and sapid in style with slightly powdery tannins on the entry and a little sinew on the finish that should be abraded during barrel maturation. This is a finely crafted Léoville Barton that should age with grace.
