"Le Pin’s geest in kalksteen: finesse, florale kracht en minerale diepte"
Château L’If is een relatief jonge ster aan het Saint-Émilion-firmament, maar één die in korte tijd een bijna mythische reputatie heeft opgebouwd – niet in de laatste plaats door de afkomst. Het domein is namelijk sinds 2010 in handen van Jacques Thienpont, de man achter het legendarische Le Pin in Pomerol. Waar Le Pin bekend staat om zijn zeldzame kracht en zijdeachtige concentratie, vertaalt L’If diezelfde filosofie naar de kalk- en kleibodems van de rechteroever in Saint-Émilion. L’If is geen tweede wijn, maar eerder de geest van Le Pin in een ander terroir.
De wijngaarden liggen op een hoge helling naast Troplong Mondot, met klei op kalksteen – ideaal voor gestructureerde Merlot en verfijnde Cabernet Franc. De 2024 is gevinifieerd met uiterste precisie: 85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, geoogst tussen 4 en 8 oktober, met een opbrengst van 39 hl/ha. De vergisting vond plaats met minimale interventie, gevolgd door rijping in 50% nieuw eikenhout.
De wijn toont een diep robijnrode kleur met levendige reflecties. Het bouquet opent met bloemen, frambozen, rode aalbessen en een vleugje tomatenblad, pepermunt en mineraliteit. Op de tong elegant en fris, met ragfijne zuren, een medium body en een precieze structuur. Er is een duidelijke spanning tussen frisheid en rijp fruit, met een finale die ziltig, kalkachtig en lang blijft nazinderen.

L’If 2024 is geen blockbuster, maar een wijn voor fijnproevers. Hij bezit de nerf, elegantie en diepgang die grote bewaarwijnen kenmerken – maar blijft altijd bescheiden, in lijn met de stijl van zijn maker.

Vivid purple colour in the glass, lovely bright rim with aromatic purity, crystalline pink and purple fruits with floral scents. Some nice green aspects and a touch of blue fruit, iodine and saltiness. Pure and clean, fruit has such clarity with lively acidity that gives a tang before the expression becomes a little creamy and smooth. A lovely, easy, filling and balanced example with lots of personality and still signature of the limestone soils. Plenty of clean fruit, and liquorice tang. Really great. Excellent texture, minty, clove, great freshness and graphite. Good momentum here. Same pH as 2023. A yield of 38hl/ha. Ageing 50% new barrels, 50% in one wine barrels for 12 to 16 months. 3.37pH.

Initially you find notes of crushed rocks, before you delve into the flowers, plums, licorice, and salty cherries in the perfume. On the palate, the wine is sweet, juicy, fresh, and expressing a gorgeous sense of purity, lift, energy, and elegance, finishing with sweet, ripe, red plums, and raspberries. The wine blends 85% Merlot with 15% Cabernet Franc, 13% ABV, pH 3.37. The harvest took place October 4 - October 8. Drink from 2028-2042.

Love the aromatics here, and vibrant ruby colour, this is a real success and bright spot in the vintage, one to look out for, fragrant, tomato leaf, peony, lilac, raspberry fruits, lots of energy and delicate juice, not a powerhouse but skilful and early to medium drinking. 3.37 ph. Harvest 4 to 8 October, really held on to push for maturity. 30% new oak, even after sorting they are at 39hl/h yield here on these clay-limestone soils. Touch of chaptilsation and saignée, showing that even with waiting til October to harvest these things were needed.

The 2024 Château L'If comes from vines located just beside Troplong Mondot and is based on 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, with the Merlot harvested between October 4 and 6 and the Cabernet Franc picked on October 8. This deeper-hued beauty offers terrific aromatics of ripe black cherries, darker currants, leafy herbs, and a beautiful sense of minerality. It's nicely textured, medium-bodied, has a ripe, layered, round mouthfeel, and sweet tannins. It's a beautiful wine in the vintage that's well worth your time and money. The alcohol is a natural 13% with a pH of 3.37, and it will spend 12-16 months in 50% new barrels, with the balance in once-used oak.
