“One of the most suave, classy vintages from this estate in some years”

William Kelley (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate) noemt het niet voor niets “One of the most suave, classy vintages from this estate in some years”.

Neal Martin (Vinous) noemt de 2023: “impressively textured, balanced Margaux in the vintage that has ample charm and character”.

In lijn met de stijl en de afdronk, schreef James Suckling; “The finish has gorgeous al-dente fruit at the end and is always subtle”. Malescot 2023 is een van de meest elegant gestructureerde wijnen van de appellatie en een waar kunststuk.

This has a very deep and beautiful palate with cherries, chocolate, hazelnut and orange peel. Pretty blackcurrants and blue berries, too. Medium body. The finish has gorgeous al-dente fruit at the end and is always subtle. Open tannins. A blend of 58% cabernet sauvignon, 37% merlot, and 5% petit verdot.

One of the most suave, classy vintages from this estate in some years, the 2023 Malescot St. Exupery is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. Wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, berries, licorice and pencil shavings, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent, with good depth at the core, supple tannins and a harmonious, integrated profile. Part of the blend is maturing in foudre.

Black cherries, blackberries, licorice, chocolate, and flowers create an opulent, deep, dark, styled wine. The fruits are ripe, soft, polished, sweet, clean, and pure. There is weight, with ample lift, making it fresh, as well as fruity. The amount of new, French oak for the aging has been reduced from 80% to 60%, which has added more complexity to the wine. The wine is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. 14% ABV. Harvesting took place September 19-October 10. Drink from 2029-2055.

The 2023 Malescot St. Exupery is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It offers up classic scents of blackcurrants, kirsch, and pencil shavings followed by nuances of crushed rocks and cardamom. The medium-bodied palate delivers a firm frame of grainy tannins and well-knit freshness to support the taut black fruit, finishing long with a minerally lift.

The 2023 Malescot St. Exupéry is a powerful Margaux that will need a bit of time to come together. Potent tannins wrap around a core of red/purplish fruit, lavender, mint and dried herbs. These days, Malescot is not quite as unyielding as it used to be, but this remains a decidedly old-school Margaux in style and overall philosophy.

The 2023 Malescot Saint-Exupéry was cropped at 38L/ha, picked a day later than the previous year. Lea Zuger told me that they now use sic foudres installed in November, meaning there is 60% new oak - less than other vintages. Barrel-maturation will be 14 to 16 months. Whereas in 2022, nearly all the estate’s fruit went into the Grand Vin, this year it represents 75% of the volume. Displaying blackberry and briar on the nose, this demands some coaxing from the glass. There’s just a light, confit-like aroma in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine structure, slightly powder tannins, modest weight and noticeably fresh acidity and salinity, the latter especially prominent toward the finish. More classically hewn compared to the 2022, this will require five or six years in bottle. Classy.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, brightening at the edge. Delicately tobacco-like, ripe cherry fruit, hints of cranberries, floral touch, candied orange zest. Deep, dark berryish fruit, vivid tannins, subtle fruit in the finish, nougat in the finish, salty aftertaste, good ageing potential.

Rocking red and black fruits, spicy wood, savory herbs, and sandalwood notes all define the 2023 Château Malescot Saint Exupéry, and it's medium-bodied, supple, and elegant on the palate, with beautiful tannins. It's another impressively textured, balanced Margaux in the vintage that has ample charm and character.

Dark plum colour, this is inky, richly oaked, right on brand, with cloves, cassis, liqourice and cocoa dusting. Léa Zuger came back five years ago from Cananda to take over at the estate from her father who is looking to retire, and she is looking to lower the oak influence over next few years. Michel Rolland continues to work with them (as of 1991) himself, which is unusual these days. 60% new oak, harvest september 19 though to October 10. 39hl/h yield, 26.8ha in production right now because just pulled out their Cabernet Franc and will replant with Cabernet Sauvignon.
