Criticus Jeb Dunnuck: ‘A brilliant effort, if not the finest vintage of this cuvée I've tasted.’ Jeff Leve van The Wine Cellar Insider vindt dat Clos du Marquis het kaliber van een Grand Cru Classé heeft!

I loved the 2022 Clos Du Marquis, which is a brilliant effort, if not the finest vintage of this cuvée I've tasted. Cassis, graphite, and floral notes all define the bouquet, and it's full-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins and flawless balance. It shows the ripe, concentrated, powerful style of the vintage yet is incredibly pure and seamless, with everything in the right places. It's going to round into form with just a few years of bottle age but have decades of prime drinking.

Deep dark ruby garnet colour with opaque core and purple reflections, delicate brightening on the rim. Ripe plums and sweet cherries, cloves, candied orange zest, some nougat, inviting bouquet. Complex, taut, fine fruitiness, ripe, supporting tannins, mineral and salty finish, a touch of chocolate in the background, good ageing potential.

Structured and fluffy with a blanket of fine tannins. Full-bodied yet agile and floating. Juicy at the end. Excellent finish. Lots of lead pencil and crushed stone at the end. 45.5% merlot, 44.5% cabernet sauvignon and 10% cabernet franc.

We've never seen such refined Cabernet Sauvignon at this property, says Jean-Hubert Delon of the 2022 Clos du Marquis, and the resulting wine is certainly unusually suave and expressive, bursting with aromas of cassis, plums, orange zest, violets and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with excellent concentration, supple tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish, it will likely offer a rather broad drinking window.

Loaded with blackberries, and creme de cassis, the wine offers its layers of mouth-coating dark fruits, ripe, firm, soft tannins, and long, intense, mid-palate with no effort. Classified Growth in quality, the wine finishes with cool spearmint, lush, dark red berries, richness and length.

A blend of 45.5% Merlot, 44.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Clos du Marquis has a deep garnet-purple color. It charges out of the gate with notes of crème de cassis, plum preserves, and juicy blueberries, followed by wafts of dried roses, fertile loam, and unsmoked cigars. The medium-bodied palate has lovely freshness and fine-grained tannins framing the exuberant black fruits, finishing with a refreshing lift.

The 2022 Clos du Marquis was picked from 8-30 September and is matured in 53% new oak with 14.25% alcohol. It is very perfumed and high-toned on the nose. The 2022 is floral and powerful, with black cherries and blueberry fruit, perhaps not quite the delineation, almost pastille-like. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fresh with pleasing mineralité. This remains linear and tensile toward the finish, with graphite lingering on the aftertaste. Excellent.

Dark bramble fruit on the nose with touches of graphite, violets, pencil shaving, liquorice, ink, dark chocolate and mocha. Forward and open, rich and opulent, such intensity of dark fruits giving power, concentration and forward motion but so sleek and sensuous. This is confident but serious in that it expands vertically growing in complexity and gaining more density and velvety texture. Acidity is there but not so pronounced putting the emphasis more on the construction. Feels extremely well made with precision and long length. 3.70pH. 84IPT. A yield of 33hl/ha.

Cocoa bean, smoked coffee bean, intense tannins, powerful with depth and concentration, dense tannins, cassis and baked plum fruits, a ton of dark pepper spice, and baked earth, expands outwards through the palate, plenty of St Julien character. 34 hl/ha, 53% new barrels, 3.7ph. As of this vintage, the vines that were in le Petit Marquis have been included back into Clos du Marquis.
