Een deel van de druiven ondergaat een korte periode van indroging (appassimento), een techniek die de wijn zijn kenmerkende rijkdom en complexiteit geeft. Het resultaat is een diepgekleurde, krachtige wijn die barst van het aroma. In de neus ontdek je tonen van donkere kersen, bramen, specerijen, tabak en een hint van balsamico. De smaak is vol en gelaagd, met een zijdezachte textuur die de krachtige tannines perfect balanceert. De afdronk is fenomenaal lang en complex, met echo's van donkere chocolade en espresso. Deze Valpolicella Superiore heeft een enorm bewaarpotentieel en zal zich de komende decennia prachtig ontwikkelen.

Very dark ruby with garnet reflections. Very intense and multi-layered aromas of ripe blackberries and blueberries, candied oranges, dark chocolate, violets and a hint of lemon balm. Very rich on the palate with a fine interplay between the fruit and the savouriness, very powerful yet elegant with a touch of balsamic on the very long finish.

Restrained dark bramble fruit and vibrant spiciness, with notes of cold coffee, earth and bay leaves. The attack is dense and velvety, with thick, ripe tannins that are a bit sandy. Ripe and full-bodied with crisp acidity and good length focused on graphite. Power and grace, with a restrained chocolate aftertaste. Drink or hold.

The Dal Forno Romano 2011 Valpolicella Superiore Monte Lodoletta (aged in oak for 24 months) is a texturally rich wine (much bigger than the 2005 vintage that I tasted in the same flight). This is a gritty and powerful expression with tar, smoke and savory spice. With time in the glass, subtle hints of dried blackcurrant and pressed rose begin to emerge.

The wet 2018 vintage has conferred this Valpolicella Superiore – a blend of 60% Corvina, 15% Croatina, 10% Corvinone, 10% Oseleta and 5% Rondinella – with an accessible and fragrant character compared to its more typical firmly shut down youth. Intense scents of potpourri, iris, crushed violet, fresh blueberries, herbs and a hint of black tea lead to a cocoa-dusted palate of succulent and ferrous red fruits, balanced by good acidity and with that beautiful fragrance wafting through. While still ageworthy, you could enjoy this sooner than other recent vintages, such as the magnificent 2016 tasted alongside it.

At first, it smells and tastes of raisins and very ripe black cherries, but a tart cranberry note comes to the fore on the palate, alongside oregano and dark chocolate. It’s full-bodied with masses of flavour but is not syrupy or jammy. It’s actually very dry with brisk acidity that adds freshness and poise. The tannins are grainy but don’t dominate the wine, and it should have a long life ahead. Though it isn’t cheap, it outshines many an Amarone.
