Fuligni is een familiebedrijf dat al sinds 1899 wijn produceert in Montalcino, een klein dorpje in de Toscaanse wijnstreek Chianti Classico. De familie is een van de historische families in Montalcino, vervlochten met kronieken van hertogen en handelaren. De familie neemt een oud palazzo van de hertogen van de machtige De Medici-familie in gebruik als residentie en de nog oudere kelders onder het palazzo dienen als wijnopslag. Toen die wijnopslag zijn limiet bereikte, werd er uitgebreid naar de kelders van het voormalig klooster van Cottimelli, uit de 16de eeuw. Als knipoog naar dat edele verleden, heten ze ook wel ‘Eredi Fuligni; de ‘erfgenamen Fuligni’.
Het wijnhuis bezit 100 hectare aan wijngaarden, die worden beplant met de druivensoort Sangiovese Grosso. De druiven worden zeer zorgvoldig op rijpheid en kwaliteit geplukt. De basis van de hoge kwaliteit van de Brunello wordt gelegd door de zeer lage opbrengst van de stokken. Met een relatief hoge plantdichtheid (3.000 en 5.000 stokken per hectare) en zorgvuldig snoeien en handmatig oogsten wordt de opbrengst gedrukt tot één fles per plant. In de wijngaard wordt overigens ál het werk met de hand gewerkt om aan de kwaliteitseisen van de Fuligni familie te voldoen. Indien de kwaliteit niet aan de eisen voldoet voor Brunello, worden de druiven gebruikt in de Rosso di Montalcino en Riserva's worden uitsluitend in de beste jaren gemaakt.
Na het zorgvuldig persen van de druiven ondergaan zij hun vergistingsproces in grote stalen vaten. De verdere rijping van de wijn geschiedt voor 30 maanden deels in grote eiken vaten en deels in barriques. Wat opvalt aan de wijnen van Fuligni zijn de enorme concentratie en finesse.
Het begint bij de briljante kleur, die Jeb Dunnuck “a jeweled ruby hue” noemt. De wijn is tegelijk sappig en heeft enorm fijne, volle textuur. Rozen, tomatenblad, groene kruiden, aardse tonen en een nootachtige geur geven de wijn diepgang. Falstaff gaf de wijn 100 punten en concludeerde: “shows wonderful drinking flow, one does not want to stop, classic.” Dat heeft alles te maken met de balans tussen tannines met zachte grip en een compacte kern van fris fruit: zwarte kersen, wilde bessen en aardbeien. De wijn blijft lang nazingen op de tong. “Simply gorgeous” (Jancis Robinson).

Brilliant, energetic ruby with a slight garnet sheen. An open and accessible nose, with inspiring notes of blood orange, juicy cherries and a hint of saffron. Present gripping tannin in many layers, juicy fruit in the course, shows wonderful drinking flow, one does not want to stop, classic.

So perfumed and seductive on the nose, with black cherries, minerals and rose petals that follow through to a medium body with ultra-fine tannins. Its finesse and vision tell you why Brunello is great. Long, vivid and beautifully balanced. Already a joy to taste, but best after 2027.

The Fuligni 2021 Brunello di Montalcino is an elegant expression with layers of dark fruit and blackcurrant that give way to pressed rose, grilled herb and petrichor, recalling rocks bathed in hot sunlight. The wine is chiseled and refined, owing to the classic nature of the vintage and the restrained, non-extractive house style that distinguishes Fuligni, a historic estate based just outside the village of Montalcino on higher-elevation sites. The wine shows precision with fine tannic tension and a linear, poised finish, making it an ideal match for traditional Tuscan dishes such as pappardelle al cinghiale or grilled lamb with rosemary. The wine ages for three years in Slavonian oak casks and tonneaux, resulting in a production of 30,000 bottles.

Displaying a jeweled ruby hue, the 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino is refreshing and complete, with ripe red cherries, orange peel, dusty earth, potpourri, cocoa, and bright spice on the nose, along with hints of floral incense and delicate smoky earth. The palate is medium to full-bodied and energetic, with refined, angular tannins, zesty lift, and balanced length that keeps it classic and vibrant. I love this vintage for Fuligni, and it should continue to improve with time. Drink 2026-2040.

With vineyards to the east of the town, Fuligni follows a traditional approach, normally releasing just one Brunello, and a Riserva in selected vintages. The estate’s flagship annata bottling is crafted to be accessible in its youth. In 2021, it demonstrates that affability without divulging all at once or sacrificing ageing potential. Veiled in dark earthy nuances to begin, aromas gain in precision with each swirl. Heady scents of violet and lilac lead to the velvety palate, where fleshy cherry and apricot are swaddled in caressing tannins that you can sink your teeth into. These bite back with chalky confidence. With beams of bright acidity throughout, this lingers with pure pleasure.

Lustrous mid ruby. Fine, concentrated cherry and raspberry nose with a subtle oak note. Fluid, elegant and at the same time concentrated and refined. Long, perfumed finish with grainy tannins that follow the fruit. Simply gorgeous.
