"Puur, pittig en precies"

Afkomstig van een volwassen wijngaard in de regio Hawke's Bay, aangeplant op kalkrijke bodem en in 2017 aangekocht door de familie Brajkovic. Waar de Estate Chardonnay de meest kalme is van het stel, is Rays Road de meest sprankelende en energieke. Een wijn met focus, lijn en lengte, puur, pittig en precies. Een feest der herkenning voor de liefhebber van Chablis en een geweldige ontdekking voor ieder ander.

"Hand-harvested in this Raukawa vineyard acquired in late 2017 from Trinity Hill as a joint project with Pascal Jolivet of the Loire. Whole-bunch pressed Spontaneous fermentation and 100% barrel-fermentation in used French oak. 100% malo and 11 months’ maturation in barrel. The first Kumeu River vintage was 2018 but they reckon this is the best so far. Since acquiring the vineyard in 2018 they have been systematically replacing the Sauvignon Blanc vines, whose fruit is sold off, with Chardonnay. (Trinity Hill’s clone 95 Chardonnay planted in early 2005 is reckoned a bit too austere for the Rays Road bottling so goes into the Village bottling.) They may eventually release single-block Chardonnays. Quite intense, bright fruit. Excellently aromatic. Almost pungent with a hint of putty. Lots of punchy fruit. Very complete with an appetising dry finish." (Jancis Robinson MW, 17/20)

"A tight, focused and dense white. Sliced cooked apples, minerals and stone, with hints of dried mangoes. It’s medium-bodied and focused with a flavorful finish. Lime undertones. Drink or hold."

The Ray's Road vineyard is in Hawke's Bay on a north-facing slope at 180 meters above sea level. It is planted on limestone and dry-grown. The 2023 Rays Road Chardonnay is reductive, nutty and saline, with green inflections that highlight the solids in the wine. This is the most complex of the wines in this release, with curry leaf and saffron, sugar snap peas, green apple and caper brine in profusion, yet I feel it is also the most angular and the most obvious. Those seeking intensity of flavor will be attracted to this cuvée the most, for its intensity and depth, however it lacks the quiet focus of the other wines.

"This leased 1.8-ha vineyard, all clone 15, was planted 1994. There are another two years to run on the current lease but the Brajkoviches are hoping to renew it and are heartened by the fact that, although Kumeu is prime redevelopment area, there has been no change in planning permissions for the moment. Milan Brajkovich has been completely in charge of viticulture there since 2017 and reckons the vineyard has improved as a result. Whole-bunch pressed. Spontaneous fermentation. 100% barrel-fermented in used French oak. 100% malo and 11 months ’maturation in barrel. According to Paul B, the 2008, opened fairly recently in a search for a wine to add to their Crémant at disgorgement stage, was looking surprisingly good. Sturdy, dry, burgundian nose. Very textural start with very slight oiliness towards the end. Already very broachable with a tiny hint of lemon cough sweets on the finish. Will surely develop more creaminess and less of a grainy texture. Still some tannins evident."

"Fruit off a north-facing site, owned by Angela and Tim Coddington, nearby at Waimauku, which has been part of Kumeu River Estate chardonnay since 1998. The fruit is distinct, rich and powerful so in 2006 it was elevated to a single vineyard wine. Easy to understand why. This is super smart, the acidity reined-in yet with light layers of texture that give this depth. It’s flinty, savoury and moreish. There’s a hint of caramel-creamed honey and grilled nuts with lemon-lime accents, plus lemon curd. All in all, finely tuned and compelling."
