Deze tweede wijn van het beroemde Mouton Rothschild kreeg bij de geboorte in 1993 de naam 'Le Second Vin de Mouton Rothschild'. Een jaar later werd duidelijk dat het die schoenen al ontgroeid was: het werd Le Petit Mouton. De 2024 is een wijn van "excellent depth" (James Suckling, 95-96 punten).
Overigens is er niets kleins aan deze wijn.
Het is een volbloed Mouton Rothschild. Hij wordt gemaakt van de druiven van de jongere stokken, die tevens de Pauillac 1e Grand Cru Classé-status genieten. Bovendien wordt de wijn op exact dezelfde consciëntieuze manier gemaakt als de Grand Vin.
Sommige wijnschrijvers hebben het dit jaar over 'lichtvoetig'; precies wat de doorgaans zo intense en compacte Le Petit Mouton deze jaargang zo sierlijk maakt. "Here you get that sexy Petit Mouton kick, defined by Cabernet", schrijft Jane Anson. Er is duidelijk aroma te herkennen van espresso, rood en zwart bosfruit, chocolade en grafiet. Het heeft niet de bombarie nodig van zwaardere jaren en krijgt daardoor meer ruimte voor de subtiele houtimprint, het heldere fruit en de hartige kruidigheid, die hoort bij Pauillac van grote klasse. Kortom: geen Bordeauxverzameling is compleet zonder de Petit.

Excellent depth. Though there is not much density, this exhibits outstanding cabernet character with paprika, tapenade, dark tobacco and black fruit. Medium- to full-bodied with fine-etched tannins. Great poise and elegance. Light on its feet but doesn’t need any more richness. 67% cabernet sauvignon, 26% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.

The 2023 Le Petit-Mouton is being matured in 50% new oak for a planned 18 months. It has an attractive, understated bouquet with pencil shavings and cedar-tinged black fruit—not as complex as the 2022, but refined. Two weeks later the nose demonstrates just a soupçon more éclat [brightness]. The palate is medium-bodied and harmonious with crisp acidity on the entry, dashes of spice and black pepper on the back-palate and moderate length on the linear finish. Give this three or four years in bottle.

Low yields, as measured by bunches per shoot, come through in the wine's density and power. The 13% alcohol is super-classic. The 2024 is shaping up to be a very serious wine.
