Shimmering ruby red with a violet lustre. Compact nose, ripe cherry, fresh rosemary, juniper and leather. Highly elegant and harmonious on the palate, rests in itself, noble tannin structure, elegant acidity, long, juicy finish.

The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is a total pleasure. Violets give way to radiant black cherries, cedary spice and wet stone on the nose. The palate is smooth but lifted and precise, with tantalizing acidity guiding ripe red and blue fruits. Remarkably pure but potent, the 2022 leaves a saturation of licorice and clove that adds a pleasant bitter chew to the long, gently tannic finish. Few producers could deliver this level of finesse and grace from a vintage like 2022.

The organic Poggio di Sotto 2022 Rosso di Montalcino could easily be mistaken for a Brunello, and a very good one at that, thanks to its depth, polish and composure. The wine offers a clear preview of the 2022 vintage with dark fruit aromas and medium- to full-bodied concentration, framed by a sweet, open texture that is neatly lifted by fresh acidity. Sourced from vineyards across the estate’s 20 hectares, this Rosso reflects Poggio di Sotto’s uncompromising standards in both farming and fruit selection, resulting in a release of 28,000 bottles plus larger formats.

The 2021 Rosso di Montalcino is dark and intense, smoldering up with masses of smoky black cherries, sage and incense. This possesses a core of ripe wild berry fruit underscored by saline minerals and savory spice, all guided by zesty acidity. The 2021 finishes structured and long, with a concentration that reminds me more of Brunello than Rosso, leaving grippy tannins and hints of sour citrus that keep me looking back to the glass for more. There will be a 10% reduction in quantity for 2021 due to hail in August. The decision was also made to reduce maceration time down to a month, using a gentler practice to counterbalance the character of this warm and dry vintage.

From a brutally challenging year marked by near-desert conditions and an unusually early green harvest, the 2022 Rosso Di Montalcino still marries richness with surprising freshness. It offers a beautiful perfume of ripe cherries, dried herbs, and dried purple flowers. The palate is medium-bodied and structured, with ripe tannins, a touch of dry extract, and refreshing acidity that’s notably bright for the vintage. It should drink beautifully for years. Drink 2026-2040.

Earthy on the nose, featuring sour cherries, rose petals, cedar and hints of walnuts. Compact and structured with a medium body, chewy tannins and a good tension on the finish. From organically grown grapes. Try in 2026.

Fun and lively, this has a really easy and lifted profile - full of clean and bright berry fruit with a touch of dried flowers and soft spice - cinnamon, dried roses, lavender - aligned to quite forward and present tannins that give this a plump and round expression. It's juicy and fun, a little bit compact still, but that will settle. A lovely wine.
