The 2021 Swanesang includes 85% stem addition, higher than the 2019, with 11 months of the lees. It was the first vintage where Bredell had to do some suckering. I had to wait two or three minutes because of the reduction, but wow, it is worth the wait. It unfurls with exquisite red fruit, a hint of blueberry, pressed violet and light garrigues scents. There is something sensual about the aromatics here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannines, pure black and red fruit, an insistent grip with a complex white pepper and thyme infused finish. You will find it difficult to find a more soulful and importantly delicious Syrah from the Cape.

Grapes from bush vines planted in the late 1990s. 80% whole-bunch fermentation. Haunting aromatics of red and black berries, lilies and fynbos, plus subtle notes of licorice, pepper and spice. The palate is medium bodied with concentrated fruit, lemon-like acidity and wonderfully fine-grained tannins, the finish super-dry. Once again, this wine impresses with how absolutely seamless it is.

This is Bernhard’s top single vineyard Syrah. The élevage is solely in older oak barrels of 400L and some 225L sizes right up to bottling after 11 months on the fine lees in barrel. So fresh, supple and bright with raspberry and cherry fruit. Very pure and expressive: direct and vivid with nice grip. So lovely, fresh and grainy with crunchy tannin acting as a foil to the fruit.
