Proefnotitie

Score: 93-95

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Villemaurine rolls sensuously out of the glass with notes of plum preserves, blueberry pie and Black Forest cake with touches of underbrush, spice cake, star anise and unsmoked cigars plus a hint of potpourri. Full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with rich, seductive fruit, framed by plush tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and layered. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Aging is expected to be for 14 months in oak barriques, 75% new.

This is really fantastic with density and richness and lots of minerality. Full-bodied, layered and extremely long. This has so much density and agility in the center palate. Better than 2015 and 2016?

Deep, firm damson fruits on the nose lead to a palate with a gourmet twist of liquorice on the attack, which pulls up carefully as it progresses. It's a well judged wine with good extraction that emphasises the ripe depths to the fruit, and gourmet notes of tar and chocolate come in towards the finish, well balanced by the fruit so as not to overpower.
36hl/ha after selection. Owned by the Onclin family, with Hubert de Boüard consulting.

Deeply colored, the 2018 Château Villemaurine comes from a terrific terroir of light clay over limestone (the classic terroir of the upper plateau around the village of Saint-Émilion) and is an 80/20 split of Merlot and Cabernet Franc resting in 75% new French oak. Spicy oak, blackcurrants, incense, and sandalwood notes all emerge from this full-bodied yet elegant and beautifully balanced 2018. It has plenty of power but shines more for its elegant, seamless texture. It’s worth pointing out that Hubert de Boüard now consultants here, and this 2018 is a brilliant wine in the making.
